The (Reichenbach) Fall
English doctor and soldier John Watson is hospitalized due to injuries sustained in combat; there he meets Alexandria, a young girl recovering from a broken arm. To pass the time, he begins to tell her an epic story about a consulting detective named Sherlock Holmes and his nemesis, Moriarty.
Alexandria’s imagination brings the story to life, casting her friends and the people around her as the characters John describes. And although John develops affection for Alexandria, he also has an ulterior motive: by gaining her trust, he hopes to trick her into stealing a lethal dose of morphine from the hospital pharmacy.
As John’s story gets progressively darker, Alexandria grows distraught. John insists that it’s his story, but she declares that it’s hers, too, and attempts to influence the course of his tragic tale.
John: You should ask someone else. There’s no happy ending with me.
Alexandria: I still want to hear it.
