fandom is a big, cyclical mess: or, haven’t we had this argument before?
Ugh. It seems like we gave this same debate every few years, only the forum changes. I know Tumblr fandom skews ridiculously young, but…
You know how “The Mentalist” is basically the same premise as “Psych” (super observant guy pretends to be psychic, solves crimes*)? I remember when TM was oringinally announced, people (myself included) were sort of put out/bitchy about it. “We already have Psych”, we whined, “and its great! Why, CBS, why**?”
But it soon became clear that the two shows have completely different vibes/sensibilities/looks and the actors and writing were vastly different, and hey, it turns out that if the show is good, there are enough viewers out there to sustain both! There’s no reason one can’t like them both, or just one, or neither!
Hopefully, we can all learn a valuable lesson here: essentially, there’s nothing new under the sun, but no one’s gonna make you watch it, so for fuck’s sake, calm your tits, Sherlock fandom.
And also: we’ll be having this same argument again soon enough. Sigh.
* Which, lbr, was just another riff on Sherlock Holmes, anyway.
